Our Household Mason Dixon Line

There has long been a dispute in this house over something I think fundamentally comes down to the fact that there are 2 types of people in this world: those who like green bean casserole, and those who don’t.

I simply cannot understand why anyone would do that to a poor, defenseless green bean?  It is just all kinds of wrong.

Hub ADORES green bean casserole.  It was a staple on his family’s dinner table, and not just at holidays.  Somehow, this has come to mean that I am responsible for making green bean casserole for our holiday get togethers, even with my side of the family, which previously saw no use for the stuff but now, in fact, requires it.  And now you see how I am caught in a circle of hell.

So this week, I will be making the requisite casserole of canned utopia, and just so we can all see what an actual vegetable looks like, straight up green beans as well.  Sadly, at the end of the day, I know the GBC will be gone and a good portion of beans will remain, but I stand steadfast in my position.

Where do you come down on the great GBC debate? (And if you say just make all the components from scratch, I will cut you.)

  1. I like it. Mostly because I like the crunchy onions on top.

  2. I do not like it. I guess this is just a part of being married. Making food that you can't stand. I was at my in-laws and was put to the task of making pumpkin pie and pecan pie, neither of which I like.

  3. It is disgusting. We always had it growing up, sometimes on non-holidays, too (because my sister loved it) and I've always thought it was gross. I don't eat it. Luckily, no one in our families cares all that much anymore (my sister is now gluten-free and can't eat it) so we don't have it at holiday dinners. Yay!

  4. I love it too. I do like the canned version, just because that is what I grew up with, but if you remember I brought the green bean casserole 2 years ago and did the entire thing from scratch. Now keep in mind it was my only contributing dish, there is no way I could have done it with everything else too! http://thefrickinchicken.blogspot.com/2010/11/from-scratch-traditional-green-bean.html
