Half Over Again

Dear Sabrina,

One and a half. Actually, closer to 2 than to 1. In some ways, I can’t believe that’s you already, and in others, well, what took you so long? I think mostly you act and think well beyond your months, which is why it’s hard to believe you’re only 1 plus 50 percent.

You’ve just kept growing and changing, and I can’t quite keep up. You repeat so many of the words I say to you, and it’s a little thrill every time because I can hear how your language skills are developing. You know so many body parts (way more than your brother did at your age, but let’s keep that between us), but your favorite thing is to get other people’s noses. You adore your hair, except when I’m trying to give you a pony tail. Then, you turn into a greased octopus on speed and it’s all I can do not to accidentally pull of a huge chunk. You jump and dance, and both are so adorable I’d like to bottle the moments and use them to power the house.

When we went with your Aunt Bubble and Uncle Cody to the church picnic, you stole the show and asserted your independent bounce, bounce, bouncing in the bouncy house all by yourself. That day was a blast, although I could have done without the solid week after of your asking about Co-Dee! Seriously, Kid, the only time your say my name with that kind of enthusiasm, it’s more of time stopping whine that fries the insides of my ears. That I could do without as well.

Your love of Elmo and Ernie knows no bounds, and these are in fact your favorite words of the moment. I hear them several dozen times a day. I hate to use the word adorable so many times, but hey, it fits.

The very best thing is that you’ve really started giving hugs in earnest, wrapping your arms around the victim, err, recipient, with copious back patting. They’re quick, because you’re busy, but those fleeting moments make everything worth it.

I appreciate your exploratory side, but I would appreciate a little less climbing on the dining table and grabbing (and smashing) glass jars out of the refrigerator. I will do my best to give you less dangerous scenarios in which to entertain your curiosity. Perhaps some park visits, just you and me, are in order as the weather cools off.

I’m sure the next month will be chock full of adventure. We’re getting used to having a good part of the day together, with Sammy at school, and you really love the one on one attention, so I’ll give you as much as you like. (But I think your favorite part is having all the toys all to yourself with no one to grab them away from you.) You even enjoy a good grocery shopping trip. So here’s to October, being over the hump, and learning something new every day. It’s your new status quo, you know.

Love,

Mom
