Dear Jillian Michaels

I’ve been a loyal follower and admirer of your work for a long time, but today I am writing to tell you about my daughter. I think she has a crush on you.

Every time she hears your voice in the house, she stops to check out what you’re doing. She will sit down next to me and cheer on the contestants on The Biggest Loser, and breaks into a huge grin if she catches you on The Today Show. But it’s the effect that occurs when I turn on one of your workouts (usually The 30 Day Shred) that is the most startling.

She channels you. Indeed, I have my very own Jillian clone facilitating my pain.

She leans on my back to so that I can get all the way down in each and every pushup. She sits on my stomach during crunches, ensuring that my belly button has no place to go but into my spine. She hands me heavier weights even when the workout doesn’t call for them – she’s that dedicated. She suffers no foolishness from me, even when I try to remind her that I am her mother. Gets me nowhere.

Did I mention she’s 18 months old?

So thank you, Jillian, not just for the no holds barred approach that keeps me motivated to be as healthy as possible, but mostly for instilling the importance of fitness in someone who doesn’t quite understand it all yet, but gets it on her on level just the same. Some day, she'll be barking out orders for lunges and squats, and the poor kids on the playground won’t know what hit them.
