DI What Were We Thinking

When we moved into this house, it was clear the previous owners had some rather unique decorating tastes. One of the bedrooms was sponge-painted in yellow and pink pastels in such a way that it very nearly pulsated off the walls (it gave me a headache to walk into that room). So we knew there would be a fair amount of cosmetic work we’d have to do. And we did.

Most of it. We never touched the guest / kid bathroom, which sported a lovely and probably original floral wallpaper. The last owners took great pains to re-tile the floor (and those of the master bath and kitchen), but never bothered with the walls. I do not claim to understand these people, as they also never changed the filter in the air conditioner, ever (trust me, go change yours right now). We lived with it for a long time, mostly because I could never decide what I wanted to do with the room, but as of this month, that time is over. Project bathroom remodel has begun.

I’m really not a fan of wallpaper, so I knew any redecorating would involve removing the paper and painting. And that is the vortex in which we are currently spinning. We peeled off the outer layer, but there was an inner layer that really didn’t want to leave. Then began the sanding, which spread a not so fine layer of dust throughout my freshly cleaned house. We keep finding patches of paper that haven’t completely come away. I think I knew this was going to be a big project, but I’m not so sure Chris did, but he’s coming to terms with it now. (He’s a good Hub, but, as my dad says, he’s definitely more of an Elvin than a Dabnus, and if you get that reference, I love you even more.) Did I mention Chris’s entire family will be descending on this house the Saturday after Thanksgiving for what I’m calling Second Thanksgiving? We have got to work on our timing.

So if anything in these posts seems weird or unusual, I’m probably just high on paint fumes.

  1. I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a "weekend project." Good luck finishing that bathroom!
