Pomp and Circumstance

Dear Sammy,

Yet another month past, and you’re just 3 shy of hitting the big 72, otherwise known as 6. AS usual, I’m not sure how that happened, seeing as I haven’t aged a day.

Excuse me, I’m a little distracted by your rendition of a ballerina. We accept all creativity in this house.

By contrast, let me mention your new fascination with burping. I don’t know if you learned this particular skill at school or from your father, but you’re quite talented at a very young age. In fact, your teachers have mentioned your practice on more than one occasion. You’re now working on the skill of being polite. It takes all kinds.

Summer is rapidly approaching; in fact, this is your last week of school (complete with graduation ceremony), and soon you’ll be an official kindergartener. As Joey Lawrence would say, whoa. (Yes, I know you have no idea what I’m talking about. Just roll with it, whippersnapper.) We went to the kindergarten roundup at your new school and clearly the classrooms are right up your alley. You seemed right at home, and even shook hands with your prospective teachers. I’ll admit, I’m still a little nervous, but then again, I’m your mom, and I get to be. For you. You just keep on being excited.

I’m watching you enter a new phase, one that you’re ready for and one that we now know how to help guide you through. I know it’s been a lot of tests and doctor visits, but I think we understand a little bit better how your unique mind works, and we – all of us, parents, teachers, family, and friends - can help you learn and enjoy learning. You are a smart kid, on your way to getting smarter and smarter. This is, of course, the great parental dilemma: am I supposed to be encouraged or terrified by this prospect? Both, I suppose. In any way, you’ll keep going, and I can’t wait to see where it takes you. I’ll be here for the whole ride.

Love,

Mom

I know you will probably hate me for this someday. Take heart that your father has probably already killed me for posting this picture. Clearly, you children are free, creative spirits. Now, go play with your monster trucks.
