As usual, I am completely astounded by how quickly time has flown and that you’re 5 and a half today. I’m sure it doesn’t feel that way to you; after all, you’re very excited to be 6 as soon as possible. I, however, am nowhere near ready for that, since 6 will coincide with kindergarten, and that gives me heart palpitations, so I’ll happily take 5 point 5. Let’s not rush things.
I’ve probably said this before, but my favorite time of the day is when you wake up and peek out of your room to find me, your face fills up with a huge smile, and you run to tackle me with a bear hug. There is nothing more awesome, and I hope you keep doing that for a long, long time. Maybe not the tackling part. But please remain as affectionate as you are now. Nothing makes me (or your dad, or any of your grandparents, or anyone who knows you really) happier than to be on the receiving end of one of your “Oh, I LLLOOOOOVVVVEEEE yous.”
I hope you enjoyed sharing this half birthday with your schoolmates today. I would have loved to send some lovingly homemade confections with you, but it’s a little hard to get such goodies vetted in preschool these days, so chocolate candies will have to suffice. Especially since you won’t really get to celebrate whole birthdays much at school (I’m sorry, August birthdays are hard, but you can commiserate with your aunt). But I’ll do what I can to make them all special.
I’m really proud of your willingness to work on your writing and drawing more and more, and you’re just starting to sound out words in books. Your dad really likes to help you, and although you can both get a little impatient with each other, you’re doing a great job as a team. Maybe I’m not so worried about kindergarten after all.
You are your sister’s favorite person in the house, and sometimes, the world (other times, this would be Grandpa, so you’re in good company at the top of her list). She doesn’t greet me with a good morning, she asks, “Where’s Sammy?” And mostly, you enjoy her. There are exceptions when you’d obviously like to shove her out the door and lock it behind her, especially when she touches your beloved trains, but that’s as it should be. I see moments when you try to teach her Big Kid things, and those are magical. Keep up that training, and you’ll have a true partner in crime before too long. Just remember that I am your mother, and anything you try, I’ve tried before, and I will stop you hard.
Thank you for being a fairly adventurous eater, even though you’ve developed an aversion to peaches for some odd reason (I suspect a nice peach cobbler with reverse that). I will continue to push this particular envelope.
My hope for the next month is that you learn a little more about patience, grow just a smidge taller, and laugh as much as possible. Five and a half is a pretty cool age, and we need to enjoy that as much as possible, together.
Love,
Mom
